Decoding the Future of Aesthetic Individuality

In The Future of Aesthetics Global Trends Report, Allergan Aesthetics shared its long-term vision for the aesthetics industry and identified ten key global trends. One theme that underpinned almost all of them was individuality. In a follow-up supplemental report, “Decoding the Future of Aesthetic Individuality,” Allergan Aesthetics dives into and decodes this complex and deeply personal concept, exploring what it means for the industry and the learnings from it. The research was commissioned to explore the ways individuality can be expressed and the many positive emotional benefits that can be a result of it.

The report highlights internal and external factors that encourage or restrict individuality; exploring topics from culture to biology, from technology to the impact of social media. One of the key priorities at Allergan Aesthetics is an ongoing commitment to inclusivity and diversity. With that, Allergan Aesthetics fully supports individuality and self-expression and encourage self-discovery every day.

This report is just one of the ways that Allergan Aesthetics is working to continue building a brighter and more diverse future for the aesthetics industry.

Maximum Difference Research: Aesthetic Concerns are Not One-Size-Fits-All

Allergan Aesthetics funded comprehensive research to better understand facial and body aesthetic concerns across genders, ethnicities, and age groups.  The peer-reviewed findings suggest that top aesthetic concerns differ across these groups and tend to be different than what current paradigms may suggest, given most clinical studies are done in Caucasian or Eurocentric populations.

In the multicenter study, an online survey was administered to aesthetically-inclined adults—defined as those who care about addressing aesthetic concerns and are willing to go to a professional to do so—across different demographic groups in the United States, including Asian, Black, Caucasian and Hispanic/Latino populations. Respondents were surveyed about 41 facial and 31 body characteristics, identifying those they have and find bothersome. Maximum difference scaling was used to generate their most and least bothersome characteristics in each respective category.

The data demonstrate that underlying anatomical and cutaneous differences in different cultural backgrounds may explain why some ethnic groups, as well as age subgroups within the same ethnic group, cite certain issues more often as an aesthetic concern.  These data can be used by healthcare professionals to honor patient diversity, customize consultations, and address specific needs with cultural sensitivity, which can translate into achieving desired outcomes.

The data was presented at The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) Annual Meeting and the Asian and Hispanic data was further explore on a panel titled “Considerations for Patient Consultation in a Diverse Landscape,” moderated by Sara Sangha, M.D., Head of US Medical Affairs, Allergan Aesthetics and joined by leading industry experts Annie Chiu, MD, Sabrina Fabi, MD, Omer Ibrahim, MD, and Zakia Rahman, MD.
